I’m going to show you how to create a weather
station, just like this one here. We’re at the Botanical Gardens in Christchurch and
this weather station has been here for over 130 years. It gets checked daily and that’s
how they come up with the temperatures that are in your news every day. Although this weather station here is really
large, you can create something similar at home, just on a smaller scale, but is uses
the exact same principles. Your weather station at home could be as simple as a rain gauge
or a thermometer, but it can get as complicated as checking air pressure, the wind speed,
humidity, all those things and terms you hear on the news. When creating a weather station at home, it’s
important to choose the right location. A weather box like this is great. This is used
to prevent the sunlight and the wind affecting the readings. There’s lots of units now that
are digital and wireless, and they’re really helpful because you’re gonna have a panel
inside your house. When installing these, though, just be really conscious of where
you’re placing them. You want to make sure you’re not going to have any other interference
from things like antennas and TVs, and make sure your digital panel inside is close to
the unit itself. This rain gauge will just clip straight onto
your guttering outside. The cool thing with this is that it will wirelessly send through
to inside on your panel. This unit will help to measure rainfall hourly, daily, or even
weekly right through to the whole history of the unit you’ve had. This is the thermometers
they use to read the temperatures every day, but you can do something just as simple and
easy at home with just a simple thermometer. One like this that you just attach to a window
or a wall, or one like this that has a minimum and maximum reading on it as well. There’s lots of digital ways to measure rainfall,
but there’s still the tried and tested way. Here at the Botanical Gardens, they still
do it the manual way. I’ll show you how it works. The rain simply falls into here, which
is collected in this and then measured. You can do something just the same at home with
a simple rain gauge like this one. There’s some ideas on how to set up a weather
station if you can, on measuring the weather.
