SEACOAST. JEN? JENNIFER: WELL, JEN, IF IT HAD BEEN A WARM, SUNNY MEMORIAL DAY MARKET SQUARE MIGHT WELL BE FILLED WITH VISITORS AT THIS HOUR BUT FROM HERE TO HAMPTON MOST SEEM TO HAVE LEFT WELL BEFORE NOON. THIS DAY, MONDAY IS USUALLY THE QUIETEST F THE THREE-DAY HOLIDAY. BUT EVEN WITH THE RAIN TODAY, BUSINESSES WE SPOKE WITH AREN’T NECESSARILY CALLING THIS A WASHOUT. HOLIDAYS ARE USUALLY HOPPING IN DOWNTOWN PORTSMOUTH. BUT THIS COLD, RAW MEMORIAL DAY THEY’RE NOT. MONDAY IS USUALLY THE MOST QUIET OF THE THREE-DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND. PORTSMOUTH’S WATER FRONT DECKS, EVEN THOSE HEATED, WERE EMPTY. THE VERDICT ON THE UNOFFICIAL START TO SUMMER?>>OVERALL, IT’S KIND OF A GOOD START BUT NOT, DEFINITELY NOT THE MOST MEMORABLE. >>THE STORY IS THE SAME UP AND DOWN THE COAST. AT HAMPTON MORE SEA GULLS THAN PEOPLE ON BOTH THE BEACH AND THE BOULEVARD.>>WE’RE JUST RUNNING AROUND FINDING SWEAT SHIRTS. >>WHILE THE WEATHER SENT MANY HOME EARLIER THAN USUAL THOSE THAT STAYED FOUND A SUNNY SIDE. >>IT’S A NICE DAY TO GO SHOPPING BECAUSE NOBODY IS HERE. IT’S JUST US. >>I’VE BEEN COMING SINCE I WAS A KID EVERY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND SO WE WEREN’T GOING TO PASS IT UP THIS YEAR. JENNIFER: SOME BUSINESSES DIDN’T EVEN OPEN MONDAY. THOSE THAT DID STAYING POSITIVE, TOO.>>MEMORIAL DAY RAIN OR SHINE WE OPEN EVERY YEAR. JENNIFER: HOW HAS IT BEEN?>>IT’S BEEN ALL RIGHT. YESTERDAY WAS THE MOST TRAFFIC. THE FIRST FIREWORKS OF SUMMER 2017 LAST NIGHT. JENNIFER: FROM HAMPTON TO PORTSMOUTH RECOGNITION THAT THE BEST IS YET TO COME.>>WE HAVE A SHORT SEASON BUT NOT AS IMPORTANT AS SAY JULY 4TH OR LABOR DAY WEEKEND. IT’S STILL EARLY, STILL MAY. WE ARE IN NEW ENGLAND. JENNIFER: HOPE VOICED BY MOST TODAY ESPECIALLY THOSE SEASONAL BUSINESSES IS THAT THIS KIND OF COLD AND RAINY SPRING WILL NOT TURN INTO A COLD AND RAINY SUMMER.
